Energy

The region's energy sector in East Africa is not yet undeveloped and is characterized by low levels of modern energy access in rural areas and with a low per capita consumption. Access to electricity in rural areas across the region is less than 1%.

The energy sector is dominated by petroleum and electricity as the drivers of modern sectors of the economy. Biomass is predominantly used at the household level. The recent high usage of biomass in these sectors has been attributed to rising prices of petroleum products, inadequate and inefficient power supply systems arising from stunted growth in generation capacity and yet developed transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The reason for a slow development is lack of technology and economic capacity, the regional countries are working hard to create new policies and budgets in order to allow renewable energy technologies to enter the market and contribute to strengthening and diversifying supply of modern energy services in East Africa.

East Africa is endowed with resources capable of generating vast amounts of renewable energy, such as wind, hydro and solar power, though, this energy is largely untapped and the majority of their populations remained unconnected to an electric grid. Now, this is changing, Access to electricity expanding in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda too, thanks to the use of renewable energy. Four flagship projects funded by AFD are now under way to boost access to sustainable energy across the region, which will have ramifications for people’s health, security and standard of living.

Industries we serve

SOLAR POWER

Solar energy is an ideal alternative source of energy because of its potential in the region. Most of the countries experience sun nearly year round and solar radiation of between 4 – 6 kWh/m2/day has been estimated.

WIND POWER

Wind energy is a new concept in East Africa and some projects were implemented in the region, but not yet exploited that much in most of the Eastern African countries. It has been estimated that the resource is exploitable in the range 2.5 – 6 m/s in most of the countries.

HYDROPOWER

Hydropower is an important renewable source of energy; it plays an important role in the region’s energy system and its development. As per today in Eastern Africa less than 10% of its potential has been developed, as the regional countries are open to invest and develop such technologies in their countries.

GAS POWER PLANT

The 2010 discovery at the Windjammer gas field by the American firm Anadarko opened a new chapter for both East Africa and global LNG markets. It kicked off a series of finds in the region over several years, resulting in around 3.4 trillion cubic meters (tcm) of proven natural gas reserves for both Mozambique and Tanzania – just under 2 percent of the world’s total.

GEOTHERMAL POWER

Geothermal opportunities exist across East Africa’s Great Rift Valley - in Ethiopia, a geothermal power plant in the Aluto Langano region is under construction. Ethiopia's main power source, hydroelectric, has become unstable due to the impact of climate change. But it has a huge geothermal potential - approximately 10,000 MW of electric power.
